What Hair Oil Does — and What It Doesn't

Hair oil does two different jobs, and most of the confusion in how it's marketed comes from mixing them up. On the strand — a dead fibre — oil conditions and protects: it smooths the cuticle, cuts friction, and the right oil can genuinely shield the fibre during washing. On the scalp, oiling is really a different kind of ritual — massage plus whatever actives are in the oil — and that's the only place "growth" belongs, because hair grows from the follicle, not from a coated strand. A handful of botanical oils have some early evidence at the follicle level. Most of the popular "growth oils" — castor prominent among them — don't.

Search "hair oil" and the two jobs blur into one promise: smoother, shinier, thicker, faster-growing, all from the same bottle. Splitting them apart is the only way to know which claim an oil is actually entitled to make.

On the strand: what oil really does

A strand of hair is dead protein by the time it leaves the scalp — the reason "nourish" and "feed" don't really apply to it is explained in Inside a Strand. Oil can't feed something that isn't alive. What it can do is sit in and on that dead fibre in ways that change how it behaves.

Applied to the shaft, oil fills gaps between raised or roughened cuticle scales, cutting the friction between adjacent hairs as they move against each other while wet or being combed — and wet hair, at its structurally weakest, is where a large share of everyday breakage happens. That's conditioning: a real, physical, mechanical benefit.

It's worth correcting a common way this gets described. Oil does not "seal moisture into" hair. Water vapour is far too small to be trapped by an oil film, and hair is always exchanging moisture with the air around it — there is no sealed compartment for water to be locked inside. What a film of oil across the cuticle actually does is slow that exchange a little and add lubrication. That's a genuinely useful effect. It just isn't sealing, and the distinction matters because "sealing in moisture" implies a permanence oil doesn't have.

Coconut oil is the clearest example that not all oils behave the same way. Because of its small molecular size and straight-chain fatty acids, it can penetrate into the cortex rather than remaining only on the surface. Laboratory studies show this reduces protein loss during washing, making coconut oil the strongest-supported conditioning oil for the hair fibre[1][3].

Oils and silicones often solve similar cosmetic problems — reducing friction, improving slip and adding shine — but they do so through different chemistries and with limitations, as explained in the Frizzy Hair article.

None of this is "nourishment," and not every oil helps in the same way. That's the practical limit of what oiling the length can do.

On the scalp: where growth actually happens

If hair growth happens anywhere, it happens at the follicle — a living structure in the scalp, not on the dead, already-grown strand hanging below it. That's why oiling the scalp is a genuinely different activity from oiling the length, even when it's the same bottle of oil: it's really a scalp massage and botanical-actives practice, and any real growth effect from oiling would have to come from what happens there, not from coating hair that's already left the follicle behind.

Oiling the scalp isn't automatically harmless. In people prone to dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis, some oils — particularly oleic acid–rich oils such as olive oil — can worsen symptoms, while the evidence for coconut oil is mixed rather than clearly reassuring[12]. Does oil grow hair? What the evidence says

Before looking at each ingredient in detail, here's the short version. Most hair oils are much better supported as conditioners than as growth treatments, and the quality of evidence varies widely between ingredients. Even treatments that genuinely work usually increase the proportion of follicles actively growing (anagen) rather than dramatically speeding up how fast each individual hair grows.

Coconut oil has the strongest evidence for conditioning and protecting the hair fibre. Because of its small molecular size and lauric acid–rich structure, coconut oil penetrates the cortex, helping condition the fibre from within and reducing protein loss during washing. None of this demonstrates hair growth, however, and systematic reviews have found no convincing evidence that coconut oil stimulates the follicle. Claims that coconut oil dramatically "blocks water absorption" rely largely on the original 2003 study, whose water-uptake calculation has since received a credible technical critique. The penetration and protein-loss findings remain the stronger evidence[1][3][8].

Castor oil is the single most-searched hair oil in our data, almost entirely on the promise of growth and thickness — and it's also the clearest example of a gap between reputation and evidence. No randomized trial has tested castor oil for hair growth in people[7][8]. A 2022 systematic review found no strong evidence that castor oil improves hair growth or treats infestation; its only supported cosmetic effect was weaker evidence for improving luster[8]. There is a plausible biological hypothesis: ricinoleic acid, castor oil's dominant fatty acid, can inhibit prostaglandin D2 synthase, an enzyme linked to follicle miniaturisation in laboratory research[7]. But that mechanism has never been shown to translate into actual hair growth in clinical trials. What castor oil reliably does is coat the shaft, making hair look and feel thicker. By coating and aligning neighbouring fibres, it improves light reflection and increases the apparent fullness of the hair bundle — a cosmetic effect, not evidence that the follicle is behaving differently.

Argan oil has a narrower role than coconut oil. Laboratory studies suggest it can reduce protein loss from UV and oxidative damage in healthy hair, but a newer study found that in bleached hair it increased water uptake and reduced mechanical resistance, so it is not universally protective[4][5]. Current systematic reviews also do not show convincing evidence that argan oil improves hair growth, hair quality, or infestation outcomes[8]. Its strongest evidence is therefore as a conditional fibre-conditioning oil, not a growth treatment.

Jojoba oil is, chemically, not an oil at all — it's a liquid wax ester, structurally closer to human sebum than to a triglyceride oil like coconut or argan[6]. That likely explains why it feels lightweight and is often marketed as scalp-friendly. It has not been shown to penetrate and reinforce the cortex the way coconut oil does, and there is no convincing evidence that it promotes hair growth. It's best thought of as a lightweight surface conditioner.

Rosemary oil's reputation runs well ahead of its evidence. The published studies used rosemary essential oil diluted in a carrier oil, as undiluted essential oils can irritate or sensitise the scalp and increase the risk of contact allergy in susceptible people[10]. The claim rests largely on a single six-month trial comparing rosemary oil with 2% topical minoxidil, the weaker of the two commonly used minoxidil strengths[9]. Although that study reported similar increases in hair count, it has never been independently replicated and its methodology has subsequently been questioned in scientific commentary. Taken together, the evidence grade is insufficient evidence — not proof rosemary oil does nothing, but not a basis for treating it as an established alternative to minoxidil.

Pumpkin seed oil has two human trials worth noting. An oral 400 mg/day preparation increased hair count in men with androgenetic alopecia over 24 weeks, while a smaller study found a topical pumpkin seed formulation performed similarly to 5% minoxidil foam in women[14][15]. Together this amounts to Level 2, but limited evidence: genuine human trials, but small and not yet independently replicated. The strongest evidence is still for oral supplementation, not plain topical oil.

Amla (Phyllanthus emblica) now has early human evidence. A randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled trial of an oral amla preparation in women with female pattern hair loss reported improvement in the active growth phase[13]. That is Level 2 — strong but early evidence: a genuine human trial, but small and awaiting independent replication. As with pumpkin seed, the evidence is for an oral preparation, not topical amla oil.

Bhringraj (Eclipta prostrata) remains promising but preclinical. Animal studies suggest it may promote hair growth, but convincing human clinical evidence is still lacking[16].

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is widely used in traditional hair care, but we found no direct clinical evidence that it promotes hair growth in people.

Nagarmotha (Cyperus rotundus) is a reminder that preparation matters. The essential oil has been studied for hair reduction, with results comparable to laser hair removal in one study, whereas a single 2026 study of rhizome extract reported hair-growth effects in cells and mice[18][19]. These are different preparations producing different biological effects, so neither finding can be generalized to "nagarmotha oil" as a whole.

Scalp massage is often bundled together with oiling, so it's worth judging separately. A small study of nine men using a standardized massage device daily for 24 weeks found a modest increase in hair thickness together with gene-expression changes consistent with the active growth phase[17]. That's weak but promising evidence from a very small study. Importantly, the studies do not show that the oil itself caused the effect. Scalp massage can be performed with or without oil; oil mainly reduces friction and makes the massage more comfortable.

How to use hair oil

The best-evidenced use of hair oil is pre-shampoo, on the lengths, for protection — not on the scalp for growth. Applying oil before washing and giving it time, ideally with a little warmth, allows penetrating oils (especially coconut, and to a lesser extent argan) to move into the fibre before shampooing; laboratory studies found warmth accelerated this penetration[2]. This is one of the oldest forms of pre-shampoo care, long before "pre-shampoo treatment" became a marketing term[11]. A gentle scalp massage is a pleasant, low-risk ritual, but the evidence that it promotes hair growth remains early[17]. Importantly, massage can be performed with or without oil; oil mainly reduces friction and makes the massage more comfortable.

It's also common to notice more hairs during the wash after oiling. That doesn't necessarily mean the oil caused hair loss. Massage and washing often release hairs that had already completed their natural shedding cycle, making the shedding appear more dramatic than it really is.

The bottom line

Hair oil is much better supported as a conditioning treatment than as a growth treatment. Keeping those two jobs separate avoids most of the confusion around what oils can and cannot do. On the hair fibre, the evidence is strongest: coconut oil genuinely conditions and protects the strand, while a few other oils provide more modest cosmetic benefits. On the scalp, the picture is much less certain. A handful of botanicals — particularly pumpkin seed and amla — show early signals for supporting hair growth, but the evidence is mostly oral, preclinical, or awaiting replication. Castor oil remains unsupported for growth, and current evidence is insufficient to recommend rosemary oil as an established hair-growth treatment.

If your concern is breakage, frizz, or protecting the hair fibre, oiling can be a useful part of your routine. Does hair oil grow hair?

Oiling the length doesn't — hair grows from the follicle, not a coated strand. A handful of botanicals (particularly pumpkin seed and amla) show early evidence for supporting hair growth, but most evidence is oral or preclinical rather than from topical oils. Is coconut oil good for hair?

Yes — for conditioning and protecting the hair fibre. Coconut oil penetrates the fibre and reduces wash-related protein loss better than most other oils, making it the best-supported conditioning oil. That evidence does not extend to hair growth[1][3][8].

Does rosemary oil grow hair?

Current evidence is insufficient to recommend rosemary oil as an established hair-growth treatment. The claim rests largely on one small, unreplicated trial using diluted rosemary essential oil, and stronger independent evidence is still lacking[9][10].

Do oils "seal moisture into" hair?

No. Hair constantly exchanges moisture with the surrounding air. Oils reduce friction and slow moisture exchange slightly, but they do not create a permanent seal.

Should I oil my scalp or just my hair?

It depends on your goal. Oiling the lengths has the strongest evidence for conditioning and protecting the hair fibre. Oiling the scalp is only relevant if you're aiming to deliver botanical actives or simply enjoy the massage, and people prone to dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis should be cautious with routine scalp oiling[12].
