How often should you wash your hair?

You've probably heard some version of it — a stylist, a friend, or an algorithm telling you that you're washing too often. What's harder to find is a straight answer to how often you actually should.

Underneath that question sit three specific fears. The first is that washing strips your hair's natural oils. The second is that washing more just trains your scalp to produce more oil, so you end up washing your way into needing to wash again. The third is that it causes hair loss.

This article answers all three: a number, the study that found it, and where that number stops applying.

What the evidence actually says

For years there wasn't much good data behind washing advice, which is part of why it has always sounded more like folklore than science. That's changed. Frequent washing isn't some extreme modern habit, either: European shampoo frequency has risen from roughly once a week forty years ago to about four times a week today, and some Korean women report washing up to fourteen times a week[1]. In Singapore's climate, high-frequency washing is closer to the regional norm than the exception.

The most direct test of the "wash less" instinct is a 2021 study from Xi'an, China, in people with no known scalp condition[2] — strong, Level 2 evidence, pairing survey data from 1,500 people with a five-week controlled trial in 60. It didn't only ask how people's hair and scalp felt — it objectively measured scalp flaking, scalp stress and shine.

Across the 1,500-person survey, people who washed daily had less flaking, less dandruff, and shinier, better-looking hair than people who washed once a week — with five to six washes a week close behind on most of those measures. Separately, in the five-week trial, people who switched to washing daily did better across the board than those who kept washing once a week, with no sign of damage from washing that often.

Procter & Gamble funded 100% of this study and employs authors on it — a shampoo maker has an obvious interest in people washing more. Nevertheless it's a sturdy design: double-blind (neither the researchers grading the scalp nor the participants knew who was using which shampoo) and IRB-approved (an independent ethics board reviewed the study before it ran), with independent academic dermatologists Tosti (University of Miami) and Hordinsky (University of Minnesota) as co-authors — about as strong as this kind of study gets. It isn't standing alone either: a separate, industry-free survey of 4,796 people in Saudi Arabia found the same direction — more frequent shampooing tracked with better hair and scalp condition[3]. That survey is the weaker of the two on its own (self-reported, so it can't rule out a problem scalp driving wash habits rather than the other way round), but two differently funded studies landing on the same answer is what makes a finding trustworthy.

A lab test also found that repeated, heavily concentrated washing wears the fibre[4] — but under far harsher conditions than normal daily use, the same gap between lab testing and real-world use covered in shampoo mildness testing below. It doesn't undercut the finding above.

Put together, the evidence doesn't just clear daily washing of the over-washing fear — it points to daily as the better default.

When that changes

A few situations move away from that, and each is better answered by a different article than by frequency alone.

One more limit: the daily/5–6× numbers above come from a study on straight to low-texture hair — the authors' own stated limit, untested on high-curl hair, which includes much of Singapore's Indian and Malay population.

Each of those is a routing decision, not a treatment plan — this article isn't where any of those conditions gets treated.

What a wash actually takes

"Stripping your natural oils" quietly assumes that the oil on your scalp and your hair's own protective layer are the same substance. They're not, and the distinction is the most useful thing in this article.

Sebum is made by the scalp, sits on the surface of the hair, makes the hair feel smooth and is continuously replaced. Removing it is the shampoo's actual job.

The mechanism is the most persuasive part. Sebum left on the scalp chemically alters into fatty acids that trigger itch. Itch severity rose significantly over the 72 hours if left unwashed, alongside rising oil and a growing population of the scalp's resident yeast, Malassezia[2].

So washing isn't undoing something beneficial — it's resetting a surface layer that, left alone, starts causing problems of its own.

That also answers the second fear from the start of this article — that washing more trains the scalp to produce more oil. It doesn't. Sebum output is set by hormones and genetics, not by how often the scalp is cleaned[11]. What a wash changes is how far the oil has spread since the last wash, not how much the glands make[1].

18-MEA is different. It's a fatty acid attached to the outermost cuticle layer. It's structural, part of the hair fibre itself rather than sitting on top of it. It's what gives healthy hair its water-repellence and slip.

A surfactant cannot break the structure. What removes 18-MEA is bleach, relaxers, high-pH treatments and ordinary weathering over time — which is why 18-MEA content falls steadily from root to tip on everyone's hair — regardless of how often they wash it.

If your hair feels stripped, the more useful question is what's been done to it chemically, not how often you wash it. And conditioner exists for exactly this reason — it puts back the lost slip, cutting hair-on-hair friction by roughly half[5].

Sulphates, and what "sulphate-free" tells you

Common sulphates are Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES). SLES is milder[5]. Both are surfactants — the ingredient class that does the actual cleaning.

The same surfactant action that lifts sebum away can also disturb a different layer underneath it — the skin's own structural lipids. The two effects aren't separable[6]. That doesn't mean every surfactant damages equally: some biosurfactants showed negligible effects on skin cells compared with SLES[8]. But a cell in a dish isn't skin, which has a barrier layer and an immune response a culture doesn't — so this is a promising early signal, not a scalp verdict.

The problem is that laboratory tests do not always reproduce how shampoo is actually used. A human test that mimicked real scalp use — applying it via wet-hair wicks, the way it meets skin in the shower — found irritation varied with concentration: diluted shampoo was gentler than neat[7]. In normal use, shampoo is always diluted by the water in the shower, so a mildness test run at full, neat concentration overstates what actually reaches the scalp. (Two of the study's authors worked in L'Oréal's research division.)

Lastly "sulphate-free" does not automatically mean safer. Some ingredients introduced as alternatives to sulphates have been linked to allergic reactions, a risk recognised only more recently[6].

Who should actually care about any of this: people with a genuinely reactive scalp, and people with colour-treated hair, where the trade-off that matters is colour retention rather than damage.

Three habits that don't do what they're supposed to

Double-washing. It's not better than a single wash. The honest reason it feels effective: dirty hair foams less, so a second wash lathers more generously — which reads as "working harder," when it's the oil from the first wash already being gone. The full cleaning sequence is covered elsewhere; this is the short version.

Foam. Lather is a formulation and sensory choice, not a cleaning mechanism. Foam doesn't participate in cleaning — a low-foaming shampoo isn't cleaning less.

Hot water. Hot water doesn't "open" the cuticle — that's a myth. It only changes comfort and how easily sebum rinses away, not the cuticle's structure.

Skipping the shampoo: co-washing, clarifying and hard water

Co-washing — cleansing with conditioner instead of shampoo — hasn't been clinically tested, but the mechanism settles it: conditioner is built to deposit ingredients onto hair, not to lift and suspend oil the way a surfactant does. It can't do a shampoo's job, so it isn't a real substitute for one — at most a rinse for the lengths between washes, not a scalp cleanse.

Hard water measurably affects hair strength[10]. A clarifying shampoo's chelating agents remove the mineral buildup.

That matters less here. Singapore's own published water-quality data puts average total hardness at approximately 43 mg/L across 2023–2025[9]. By the standard classification, below ~60 mg/L is termed soft. Anyone who's moved here from a harder-water city may notice the improvement.

The bottom line

Sebum sits on hair. 18-MEA is part of it. Shampoo removes the first and never touches the second — and once that distinction is clear, most of the fear around washing collapses with it. The other two fears fall the same way: sebum output answers to hormones, not to how often you wash, and the strands going down the drain had already finished their cycle before the water reached them. Daily washing doesn't damage hair and doesn't cause hair loss — if anything, the itch that builds in the hours before a wash is the more honest signal to reach for the shampoo than the calendar is.

Common questions

Does washing my hair cause hair loss?

No. The strands you see in the shower had already finished their growth cycle and were due to shed that day regardless — washing just collects a normal day's ~50–100 hairs into one visible moment instead of spreading them out. Same mechanism, explained fully in Hair Loss Is Not One Thing.

Is washing my hair every day bad?

On the evidence available, no — for a healthy scalp, used with conditioner. The best-designed study available found no measurable harm at daily frequency[2].

Does washing less make my scalp produce less oil?

No. Sebum output is set by hormones and genetics, not by how often you wash — a wash changes how far the oil has spread, not how much the scalp makes.

Should I shampoo twice?

There's no evidence held here that it cleans better. It feels more effective because dirty hair foams less on the first pass, making the second lather feel more generous.

Can I wash with conditioner only?

No. Conditioner is built to deposit, not to lift oil away from hair and clean it.

Do I need a clarifying shampoo?

It depends on your water and your product use, more than on a fixed schedule. Singapore's tap water is, on average, soft, so hard-water build-up is less likely here than in many other cities — though it isn't zero everywhere.

The central finding here comes from a study funded entirely by Procter & Gamble, which also employs authors on the paper — disclosed plainly above rather than buried. It still holds up on design: the controlled arm was double-blind and IRB-approved, and two of the paper's co-authors are independent academic dermatologists, not P&G employees. That's why the funding is disclosed and weighed here rather than treated as an automatic red flag.
