Does dry shampoo clean hair?

No — and the reason is mechanical, not a matter of opinion. Cleaning hair means loosening sebum — the natural oil your scalp makes — and then rinsing it away; dry shampoo has no rinse step, so the oil it absorbs stays on your head. That doesn't make it useless. It makes it a styling product rather than a cleaning one.

It can extend the cosmetic interval between washes — the time before hair looks or feels too oily. It doesn't change what's actually sitting on your scalp.

What cleaning actually involves

A shampoo's job is subtraction, not addition. It removes sebum, dirt, dead skin cells and styling residue — everything else it does, from conditioning to shine, is added on top of that[1]. Removing sebum happens in three steps, and the third is the one dry shampoo doesn't have.

First, shampoo molecules work into the oil film and break its grip on the hair, so the oil lifts off the strand in tiny beads instead of clinging to it[2]. Second, those same molecules surround each loosened bead of oil and hold it suspended in the water, so it doesn't just resettle back onto the hair[2]. Only the third step does the actual removing: rinsing carries the oil — and what is attached to or carried by the oil film — down the drain.

Lift it, hold it, rinse it away. Dry shampoo does something different at that first stage: rather than breaking the oil's grip so it can be carried off, it soaks oil up into a powder that stays where it lands. And it has nothing at all that does the second and third steps. The oil is taken up, not taken off — which is the entire difference this article is about.

What dry shampoo actually does

Dry shampoo is built to absorb the sebum oil film — not to remove dirt, sweat, or the dead skin cells and styling residue an actual wash also takes with it. The active ingredient in dry shampoo is a fine powder — rice or tapioca starch, or a clay such as kaolin — made of particles porous enough to draw the visible oil film. The oil is absorbed into the powder and redistributed, and the powder then sits on the scalp.

Marketed as a stand-in for washing, its real usefulness lies somewhere adjacent. Oil makes nearby hairs clump together and slide flat against one another — that's the flattened look of greasy hair. A conditioner does the opposite deliberately, cutting hair-on-hair friction by roughly half to make hair slippery and manageable[1]. Dry shampoo pushes the other way: absorbing the surface oil film raises friction between fibres, so strands stop sliding past each other and stop lying flat. That's why the root visibly lifts and the whole head reads fuller — an optical and mechanical effect, not more hair. (That's our reading of the mechanism from what's known about hair-on-hair friction; it hasn't been measured for dry shampoo specifically.)

Every row in the right-hand column is either "still there" or "more of it." That's not a criticism of the product — it's a description of what a powder can do without water.

"Doesn't it clog your follicles?"

This is the claim that follows dry shampoo everywhere — that repeated use clogs the follicles, starves them of oxygen and nutrients, and eventually causes hair loss. The honest answer takes three pieces to give properly.

First, we could not find a clinical study on this. No randomised trial, no scalp-microbiome study, no sebum-measurement study has tested dry shampoo specifically.

Second, the mechanism it describes doesn't exist. A hair follicle isn't fed through the small opening where the shaft exits the skin. It's fed from below, through the bloodstream: a loop of tiny blood vessels in the dermal papilla delivers oxygen, sugar and the amino acids needed to build keratin directly to the living base of the follicle. We've written the full mechanism in How hair grows — and why it's dead by the time you see it. A layer of powder sitting on the scalp's surface cannot block that blood supply. So the specific idea that dry-shampoo buildup starves the follicle of oxygen or nutrients describes a route that doesn't exist. That rules out one explanation; it doesn't tell us that repeated use has no other effect on the scalp.

Third, "hair loss" isn't one claim — it's at least two, and they get conflated. We could not find good evidence that dry shampoo causes pattern hair loss — the kind most people asking this question actually mean. What's left is a mechanism argument against a specific bad explanation, not a clean bill of health for the product.

If dry shampoo makes your scalp itch, the useful question is whether the product is irritating your scalp — not whether it is somehow starving the follicle. Persistent itching, flaking or soreness is a separate scalp question.

The 2022 benzene recall

Dry shampoo has one recurring news story attached to it, worth addressing directly and then setting aside.

In October 2022, Unilever voluntarily recalled a number of aerosol dry shampoos in the US — sold under the Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head) and TRESemmé names — after benzene, a known carcinogen, was detected in specific lots[5]. The concern was the aerosol propellant, the gas that pushes the product out of the can, rather than the dry-shampoo powders or starches themselves; the company's own investigation identified the propellant as the source[5].

The FDA published Unilever's recall notice; it did not independently assess the risk. Its notice sets out that role plainly: "When a company announces a recall, market withdrawal, or safety alert, the FDA posts the company's announcement as a public service. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company"[5].

The recall was voluntary and reached consumer level. It covered specific lots manufactured in the year or so before it — those made before October 2021 — and Unilever stated that no other products from it or its brands were affected[5]. It shouldn't be read as evidence that current dry shampoos generally contain benzene.

How long can you push it?

There's no evidence-backed number worth giving here. Dermatology sources broadly treat dry shampoo as an occasional tool between washes, not a daily one — but we couldn't trace a specific frequency claim to a primary source, so we're leaving the number out.

What's more useful is the mechanism. The root region of the scalp is re-coated with sebum within about six hours of washing and essentially saturated by about 24 hours; after that, the oil mostly travels further down the hair's length rather than building up further at the root[4]. Dry shampoo changes how that looks. It doesn't slow it down.

You may also have heard that skipping washes "trains" the scalp to produce less oil over time. It doesn't. Sebum output is driven mainly by hormones and genetics, not habit — the same myth shows up, and fails the same way, in conversations about oiling and washing frequency.

"Oily" and "normal" hair don't actually differ much in how much oil the scalp makes. They differ in how far that oil spreads along the hair. After two days, both groups have similar amounts right at the root — the "oily" group simply has roughly twice as much oil spread along the length[4]. Dry shampoo soaks up the spread you can see. It can't do anything about the gland making it — and if the gland is what's bothering you, what you put on the scalp itself becomes the more useful question: Oiling an oily scalp — and a healthy one works through when that's worth doing and when it isn't.

So when is it worth using?

Strip away the promise ("it cleans") and the panic ("it causes hair loss"), and there's an honest case left for dry shampoo. It splits into two parts.

The first is the cosmetic case, and it isn't in question: dry shampoo makes hair look and feel less oily, adds grip and volume at the root, and buys time between washes. Judged as what it is — a styling product — it does its job.

The second point is less obvious, and rarely backed with numbers: washing isn't free — it costs your hair something. In one controlled study, hair put through 20 wash cycles with concentrated detergent and no conditioner became about 146% more porous, and the force needed to break it fell by about 9%[3]. That isn't how most people wash, so it doesn't show that ordinary shampooing damages healthy hair. It does make the narrower point that repeated washing can impose a measurable cost on an already weathered fibre. So a product that genuinely cuts how often you wash could plausibly spare the fibre — not by cleaning, but by letting you wash less.

The hair type most likely to benefit follows the same logic. Washing also measurably costs colour[3], so colour-treated and chemically processed hair — already taking more damage per wash than virgin hair — may have more to gain from stretching the gap between washes. (Again, this extends the reasoning above rather than resting on a measurement; it hasn't been tested for dry shampoo directly.)

One last thing worth settling: powder and spray formats differ in residue and in whether they carry an aerosol propellant, but neither changes the basic fact underneath both. Both absorb oil. Neither removes it.

The bottom line

If you want your hair to look less oily today: that's exactly what it does. Use it and don't feel bad about it.

If you're using it to skip washes: understand what you're skipping. The sebum is still there, along with everything else an actual wash would have taken with it.

If you're worried it's causing hair loss: we could not find evidence that it does, and the usual physiological explanation for that fear — clogged follicles starving the hair of oxygen and nutrients — is incorrect. Follicles are fed from the bloodstream, not through the surface opening.

Common questions

Does dry shampoo actually clean your hair?

No. Cleaning means detaching sebum and rinsing it away — dry shampoo absorbs oil into starch or clay powder that stays on your scalp. It changes how hair looks and feels, but does not clean.

Does dry shampoo cause hair loss?

We could not find good evidence that it does — and more importantly, nobody appears to have properly studied the question. The usual explanation, that buildup clogs follicles and starves them of oxygen and nutrients, misdescribes how a follicle works: it's fed through the bloodstream from underneath, not through the opening at the surface. So this is a mechanism argument against a bad explanation rather than a clean bill of health. If your scalp is itchy, flaking or sore, that's worth identifying rather than blaming on the product.

Does it train my scalp to make less oil?

No. Sebum output is largely hormonal and genetic — it isn't retrained by skipping washes or by using dry shampoo. What changes is how oily your hair looks, not how much oil your scalp makes.

Are homemade or "natural" versions better?

They still sit on the scalp and still don't clean. Cornstarch behaves much like a formulated starch. Baking soda is a different matter — it's strongly alkaline, around pH 9, while hair's proteins are most stable in mildly acidic conditions and shampoos are generally formulated at pH 5.5 or below. Repeatedly putting something that far up the pH scale on your scalp is a reasonable thing to avoid.

What about the benzene recall?

Editorial note

This has the thinnest evidence base of any article we've published. The mechanical answer — that cleaning needs a rinse — rests on well-established cleansing science. Almost everything specific to dry shampoo itself, for the product and against it, has no clinical literature behind it at all. We've tried to be plain throughout about which is which, rather than letting confidence about the mechanism spill over into claims we can't back up about the rest.
